Understanding merge tags

Merge tags, or personalization tags, are dynamic placeholders in your email templates that are replaced with actual data when the email is sent. They allow you to personalize emails for each recipient, making your communications more engaging and effective.

Add merge tags from the in-context menu when interacting with a text block.

Based on the event triggering your journey you will have different merge tag variables to choose from.

For order events, we currently only support *full name* and *email* variables. Let us know what other variables you would like to use as merge tags via our product roadmap!

Why use merge tags

  1. Enhance Personalization

    • Make your emails feel more personal by addressing recipients by their first name or including other personalized details.

    • Example Placeholder: *|NAME|*

  2. Boost Engagement

    • Personalized emails are more likely to be opened and clicked through because they resonate more with the recipient.

  3. Streamline Email Creation

    • Use one template to send personalized messages to a large audience, saving time and effort.

Best practices for using merge tags

  1. Test Your Emails

    • Send test emails to ensure that all merge tags are working correctly and displaying the correct information.

  2. Keep It Relevant

    • Use merge tags where they add value. Overusing them can make your email feel cluttered.

Takeaway

Merge tags are an essential tool for email marketers looking to add a personal touch to their campaigns. By effectively using merge tags, you can create more personalized, engaging, and successful email marketing campaigns.
